Mulu National Park is located about 850 km east of Kuching, right in the middle of Malaysia-Borneo.
How to get to Mulu National Park from Kuching
My initial plan was to slowly travel there by bus with some stopovers on the way, but apparently, there are not too many interesting things on that route. Additionally, it is actually impossible to reach Mulu by land; a flight from the nearby town of Miri would have been the last part of that trip anyway. So, to save all that, I chose to take a direct flight from Kuching to Mulu, which took about one and a half hours.
As for accommodations in Mulu, there are basically three choices:
- You can stay at one of the guesthouses just outside of the park.
- You can stay at the lodges inside the park.
- Or, if you really need it, you can stay at the luxury Marriott hotel right next to the small guesthouses outside.
Mulu National Park
Visiting national parks in Malaysia is quite easy. There is no need to prebook, join a large group to save money, or deal with whatever else made these things difficult in, for instance, India. Just show up, go to the HQ at the entrance, and choose which activity you want to do.
In Mulu, the main choices are as follows:
- Join a guided group to the several caves. This also gives you the opportunity to see the 3,000,000 bats living in Deer Cave fly out at sunset, which is quite impressive!
- Join a guided group for the canopy tree walk (only in the morning).
- Join for some beginner or advanced caving experiences.
- Do the several hikes that don’t require a guide. Try to be silent, watch, and listen, which is only possible when you’re not with a group. There is so much to discover in this forest.
- Probably the highlight of the park: the 2 nights / 3-day guided hike to the pinnacles, a series of 50-meter high jagged rocks in the forest.
