June 8 – June 9 : Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is a region of the coast, a bit more central in Malaysia. It is green hilly area with many tea plantations which immediately reminded me of Munnar in India.

How to get to Cameron Highlands from Georgetown

There are direct shuttle services making this connections.
Around Komtar you’ll find many small tour operators where you can book a seat in a minivan. The trip started at 7:30 am and we arrived in Tanah Rata, the main town in Cameron Highlands, around noon.

Tanah Rata

Tanah Rata is a sleepy little town but it is the main hub at Cameron Highlands nevertheless. Spending 1 full day here is enough to explore the area and see the main sights. Tanah Rata features a central bus station where you will land if you come by bus and from where you can also easily find buses in any direction for your onward journey.

Things to do

  • Visit the local tea plantations for beautiful views and to try the local teas of course
  • Try the local strawberries and Durian if you dare
  • Do one of the many hikes in the area. They can be done with or without guide, but having a local guide who was able to give a lot of insight into the local flora and fauna, did add a lot of value in my opinion.
