June 14 – June 16 : Singapore

Singapore is an independent city-state at the southern tip of the Malaysian peninsula. 5.6 million people live in this small country, which has the highest GDP per capita in all of Asia.

How to get to Singapore from Malacca

There are several daily buses doing this route, which takes about 4 hours. They tend to sell out, so it would be advisable to buy the ticket one day in advance. The bus will stop at the border and let the passengers step out for the immigration process, then continue towards Singapore. You have to fill out an online form beforehand. You can do that at Singapore immigration just before crossing the border, but your bus might not wait in that case.

Singapore

Singapore has a reputation for being a very clean city. For instance, it is forbidden to chew gum in public or even to bring it into the country! While the city certainly maintains that image at its most iconic core—the Marina Bay—it fails to do so in some other parts of town. Twice, I was surprised to encounter rather sizeable rats in public areas where they just somehow didn’t seem to fit.

The subway network in Singapore runs super smoothly. You don’t even need to bother buying tickets; you simply enter and exit by swiping your credit card, and the correct amount will be deducted subsequently.

There is a plenitude of restaurants and bars of all varieties. Obviously, eating at Marina Bay comes at a higher cost than eating local food in Chinatown.

Singapore has much to offer, and one could easily spend anywhere between 3 to 7 days here without getting bored.

Things to do in Singapore

  • Explore Marina Bay. Spend time walking around, taking pictures of Marina Bay Sands, the Lotus, the Merlion, and all the other buildings in the area.
  • Visit the Gardens by the Bay, just behind Marina Bay Sands. Plan a day for this, as there are many things to see, such as the Flower Dome, the Cloud Forest, and of course the picturesque Supertree Grove.
  • Spend a day exploring the neighborhoods like Chinatown and Little India. Chinatown especially is very beautiful with its usual array of street food and street art.
  • Visit Sentosa Island. You can reach it by cable car or road. You’ll find several amusement parks on the island, including Singapore’s version of Hollywood Universal Studios.
