August 22 – August 23 : Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, the second-largest city in Taiwan, is located in the southwest of the island. The city boasts a variety of interesting sights and attractions. Two days are generally sufficient to explore its vibrant neighborhoods and nearby attractions.

How to get to Kaohsiung from Tainan

These two cities are adjacent to each other, and the transfer can be completed via express train in approximately 30 minutes.

The city features a well-connected metro network, which is newer and more modern than Taipei’s, as well as a circular tram line. Getting around is easy, and attractions outside the city are conveniently accessible by bus.

Things to do in Khaosiung

  • Hike to Shoushan (Monkey Mountain): Explore the scenic trails and enjoy panoramic views of Kaohsiung from this hill in the southwest of the city.
  • Visit the Pier-2 Art Center: This vibrant artsy area in the southwest features contemporary art exhibitions, creative installations, and cultural events.
  • Explore Cijin Island: A short ferry ride from the mainland, Cijin Island offers beautiful beaches, seafood, and charming streets to wander.
  • See the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Memorial Center: Located outside the city, this large Buddhist complex features impressive statues, serene gardens, and temples. Getting there takes over an hour by bus and it is quite large, so plan enough time for this. Highly recommended though!
  • Stroll through Liuhe Night Market: Experience local street food, shop for souvenirs, and enjoy the lively atmosphere at one of Kaohsiung’s most famous night markets.
