From Lake Tekapo to Mt Sunday and onward to Hokitika
Mount Sunday is about 3.5 hours from Lake Tekapo, and from there, it’s almost another 5 hours to Hokitika, crossing through Arthur’s Pass to reach the west side of the Southern Alps. Driving directly from Tekapo to Hokitika takes about 5.5 hours, but you’d miss out on a true highlight.

As you approach the Rangitata Valley, the distinctive shape of Mount Sunday is visible well before you reach the car park. There’s no chance of missing it – there’s only one road, and the location of Edoras is even clearly marked on Google Maps. Simply follow the road, and it will take you right to the spot. From the car park, it’s about a 20-minute walk through the stunning scenery before you reach Mount Sunday, offering plenty of time to soak in the beautiful surroundings.
The road from Mount Sunday to Hokitika
There are two notable stops on this route, the first one being Castle Hill. Plan half an hour to have a welcome break from the long drive and explore this beautiful and unique rock formations. The second highlight is Arthur’s Pass, which you’ll drive through to cross the mountains. Along this stretch, there are several well-marked scenic stops perfect for quick photo opportunities, making the journey as enjoyable as the destinations themselves.
